Mask
Right from the start I knew
I wasn't playing a fair game
Those around me breathed differently
I just wasn't the same
Being me was not a choice
Standing out led to pain
So I developed a mask to fit right in
Using it again and again and again
The world tells us to be ourselves
But also to be like the infinite crowd
Confusing message, cruel and cold
The message ever loud
Being myself was a road to Despair
And bullying was always there
To fit with others; a chore; a task
So I found my way with a mask
A circle can't blend with a square
This mask is needed everywhere
To fit in, to belong, to find my place
I have to wear my mask upon my face
Years have passed with mask in place
Now I don't even know my real face
Neither square nor circle, warped shapes blend
My mask is now a constant friend.
I know I'll never quite fit in
I'll never confidently win
The game of life is rigged and stages
And here am I, forever caged
The world tells us how great are are
To be a different Shining star
But, being different means standing out
Leading to self doubt
Being myself was a road to Despair
And bullying was always there
To fit with others; a chore; a task
So I found my way with a mask
A circle can't blend with a square
This mask is needed everywhere
To fit in, to belong, to find my place
I have to wear my mask upon my face
There is no similarity
Between the world and me
An alien in human skin
Around an unearthly din
The bridge is raised
The mask in place
No-one saved
And no grace
Being myself was a road to Despair
And bullying was always there
To fit with others; a chore; a task
So I found my way with a mask
A circle can't blend with a square
This mask is needed everywhere
To fit in, to belong, to find my place
I have to wear my mask upon my face
